SING ABOUT IT

Harmonic Resistance

Singing as an Act of Non-Violent Resistance in Protest Movements

Protests, resistance to the oppression, have been documented going back as far as 650 BC. Today, protests around the globe continue. The effectiveness of protests teeters on the contribution of citizens. In many areas of the world, the impact of Singing Resistance (citizen choirs) has left a positive impression.

The true transformative power of singing in protest lies in its capacity to shift the atmosphere from hostile to calm.

Songs play an important role in protests. There are songs that rally courage, songs that challenge, songs that enlighten, songs that make you cry, songs that make you smile, and songs that leave you feeling angry. Songs create a vibe. Both the true vibrations that are scientifically proven to calm the body and soul, and "vibe", the ever-shifting mood of a space that is created by the beings that inhabit it.
When tensions get high and emotions are explosive, a song can be a balm. Melody and rhythmn working together to blanket everyone in love and hope.
